Surfing in Tamraght/Marocco 02-23-2010 to 03-02-2010

The cold days in the snow in northern germany made me think about a spontaneous trip to the sun with my sister. After checking the weather in Cabo Verde and Venezuela, we were sure to make a trip to one of these countries. But the flightcosts were that high, that we needed an alternative. In Egypt was no wind, the countries with wind were to cold. The we got the idea not to go windsurfing but surfing. Madeira was again too expensive (I'm glad we didn't book that tour, 'cause of the heavy weather which nearly destroyed the whole island) so we decided to go to Marocco. Good waves, lots of sun and payable flights inclusive. So we booked at wavetours a surfcamp for one week.

We entered the airplane in the snow and after the flight over Lanzerote we arrived in Agadir/Marocco. The first glimpse at the country was very different to what we expected. Everything was in a fresh green and it was unbelievable that the Sahara is not that far away. During our trip we found out, that the heavy rains the week before caused that view.

After getting our luggage we drove with an old Mercedes without seatbelts about 40 minutes to our camp in Tamraght. Only this trip through this small part of the country was worth the trip. All the way Maroccans sat at the side of the road just waiting. On the highway were donkey carts, bicycles and pedestrians. Everything seem to be extremely unstressed (Just as we wanted our vacations).

As we arrived at our house (Villa Solaria) we got some time to have a look at the house, enjoy the view over the coast and take a short nap. In the evening we meet the other guests at the house. It was a nice group of 4 Germans and one French guy. And we had at lot to laugh at the first evening. They all were already one week in Tamraght and had lots of bad luck with the weather (rain, cold and no waves or too much rubbish in the ocean to surf) but they all kept some sort of humor. After that first meeting I was sure, that we were going to have lots of fun with each other.

The next morning after a breakfast without cheese and cold meat (regards to Conny and "Mitch is not my problem") Abdullah, our surfteacher and guide picked us up with his Jeep. Only the co-driver-door was openable from outside...all other doors had to be opened from inside. And certainly there were no seatbelts in the rearseats. The co-driver was always the dj with Abdullahs iPod. Thats were I got the nick "DJ-Max". On the roof of the Jeep were our surfboards fixed with a leech...Abdullah lost one of the straps. But we never lost one board.

We surfed every day at panorama-beach, the only beach-break around Tamraght. It was close to Taghazout. The first attempts to surf were in the whitewater. We all enjoyed being in the sun and in the water...until I realised that I was completly sunburned. Note to myself "The factor-20-suncream is not enough for the february-sun in Marocco".

After the first standed whitewaterwaves Abdullah send me the last days in the greenwaves...and it was like something complete different. But you feel even more proud if you stand one ofe them. So the surfing was great fun to us all. Unfortunately Conny had an injured ancle, so she wasn't able to surf the last days of her vacation...But all the others had great fun in the waves and we learned a lot. (Thanks to Abdullah for the good teaching)

The last days the group changed a little bit. Laurent, the french guy, left on sunday and two Italians from Torino joined us. But the group stayed that nice.

In evening we sat almost every day on the terasse for eating. The meals were all very delicious. Afterwards we drank green tea with mint an lots of sugar. A speciality from Marocco. After that we went to bed very early to regain power for the naxt day of surfing.

All in all was it a great trip to a very nice country with very kind people. I'm sure I'll come back for further trips!
